About Us

The chart below shows the research themes and topics my group is involved in. The overarching aim is to further the art of cellular engineering (also known as synthetic biology), that is to develop the technological expertise and theoretical underpinning that will enable us to use biological systems as a new technological substrate. Unlike existing technologies such as microelectronics, biological systems offer some unique engineering challenges. For example biological systems evolve and adapt and at the molecular level, stochastic noise originating from molecular events means that noise is endemic and in a number of cases has a functional role.
